Hi PurpleKat,

There may not be a "magic pill" for this.

The reason the webcam does not work everywhere depends on the reason for the failure.

You might be doing this to yourself in some obscure manner.

That means the software is OK, and still manages to appear to be at fault.

Take a look at the following documents and see if anything "pops" and makes sense as far as what you are seeing.

Testing a Webcam using Your Favorite Instant Messenger

Webcam Troubleshooting (Windows 7)

HP Notebook PCs - Fixing Webcam Problems (Windows Vista)

Like I said, there is no magic - if it works, the webcam itself is OK:  There is a setting, a permission, an Option -- something that is missing on one or more of the sites that may be hanging the operation.  You have to find the "thing" that is making your life miserable and then things will work.

  • It may be nothing more than a setting in your Anti-virus software that says, "Do not allow any connections that start with the letter "M". or something stupid like that.

  • It might be something in your Browser options - try a different browser if you are using one to connect / use the webcam for some things that do not work.  For example, if you use Internet Explorer, try using Firefox.  If you use Chrome, try IE.

You might try updating your Webcam Driver:

Go to the top of the HP forum page to Support and Drivers

  • Enter your Computer Model information, and then go to Software and Drivers...
  • Enter your Operating System in the Drop-down menu...  Scroll down
  • Look for category Software - Multimedia
  • Select the appropriatewebcam software – if available for your system
  • Save the appropriate *.exe installation package on your computer

NOTE the name and the location - the *.exe file will likely save to "Downloads “

  • Install the Software / Driver installation package:  If you have ‘Admin’ control, you may highlight the package(s) and “double-click” to install, else Right-Click, Select ‘run as Administrator’ and install.

You might try a Power Reset:

Notebooks- Power Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues- Sealed Non-Removable Battery

OR

Notebooks - Power Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues - Removable Battery

The Power Reset cannot tell the difference between drivers - it does not analyze a driver before applying it.

EXAMPLE:

  • If the driver on disk is the wrong driver before the Reset, it is still the wrong driver after the Reset.
  • If the driver INSTRUCTIONS are tangled, messed up, or missing, then the Reset may fix the problem.

Why a Power Reset works to fix some issues:

The Power Reset does not install anything on your computer, it does not remove anything from your computer, and the Reset does not "change" anything on your computer.  Your data and programs remain as they were before the reset was applied.  The Reset drains out the old instructions and makes the computer go to the Operating System on disk to get new instructions.

Why a Power Reset might Not Work:

If the issue is more than just entanglement, if the "good instructions" on the computer are not good enough -- that is, you need an update, a new driver, or there is a problem that cannot be "untangled", then the Reset will not work.

If there is a hardware problem the Power Reset will not work.

Good Luck!
