I fixed it. Ordered new cable from E-bay for 20 USD, downloaded service manual from HP web page and about hour and a half of my time.  Now I am trying not to close the laptop too many times, since I hate to do this again in the near future.

That's great! Could you share some details? Which tools did you use to open the laptop, which cable you bought, how to run the cable through the hinge etc?

I found a link to dismantle the HP Pavilion dv4 laptops:

I will try to fix the display too. Fingers crossed.

Could you please provide the name and part# you used for the cable? I am in the process of trying to fix one of these dv4 laptops for my niece. not having seen it and just going off of her complaint, I ordered a new lcd. that didn't work. I then ordered an inverter. that didn't work either. I sought info if this model was involved in the nvidia bumpgate fiasco (http://nvidiasettlement.com/index.html) which was a strike out on two fronts: the time to file for the class has expired plus the model wasn't involved anyway. so, my nieces laptop has a new lcd and inverter, but the screen still won't light up unless it is opened less than 90 degrees - and then it is only bright white. absolutely no display of the windows desktop at all.

so, again, could you pleas provide the name and part # of that cable? very much thanks.

I think I may have found it. Just Googled "Pavilion DV4 display cable" and whoop, there it is! Already ordered and waiting for delivery. Glad I found this post.

OK, here you can find the cable:

Download instructions from HP. It is well written and easy to follow.

HP Pavilion dv4 Entertainment PC

Maintenance and Service Guide

Document Part Number: 598157-001

All you need is small philips screwdriver. Just be careful not to break any plastic parts. And organize the screws as you remove them. They are different sizes and you do not want  to interchange them.

Good Luck!!

Has there been a recall on these computers?  Did you file a complaint with the FTC?  I bought one for my daughter and 1 month out of warranty the screen decideds to come on whenever it wants to and lately thats not much.  Her computer is just over a year old and that shouldn't be happening.  I have owned a lot of HP products and this one has really disappointed me.

i've read your  reply about the HP Pavilion Dv4 no display problem...

and it is exactly same as you said...  capslock and numlock is blinking sequencely and continuously...

well this problem forced me to withdraw from 2 of my college classes, and HP seems to not care for the consequences their faulty design has brought us, because as I can see I am not the only one having this problem. If we trusted this company and bought their product I believe we should at least get an explanation and the problem fixed. I am sure many of us have lost valuable information, time and money due to this problem which is not our fault. I would ask of anyone with this screen problem to send a written complaint to HP maybe in the numbers we can get some response from the company other than "your computer is out of warranty." If no valid response is offered from the HP company i will take legal action. It is just not fair that we have to pay for faulty product that was advertised as a reliable one. I spent about $800 on my computer and I cannot afford to buy another one, for me the computer is an essential tool, because I am attending college, and I am sure many of you are too.

I agree with you about HP however I'll have to give to the engineers that designed these dv4, they knew how to

make them go black right after the warranty expires.

I bot dv4 for only 2 years. I have same problem. HP should be responsible for this design fault.
