Folks,

I'm confused as to what my problem may be .. cable, inverter, screen, bulb, GPU?

My wife DV4-1540US boots up fine and can display fine to an external monitor (so I guess that nixes the GPU as a culprit).  What won't work is the notebook's LCD display.  There have been no green lines prior to this (that I know of).  And it's not totally black. Instead, it looks like there is a flashlight on in it somewhere (so probably nixing the bulb as the culprit and possibly also the cables).

I've tried pressing on the left hinge and that does nothing.  Prior to this, it's been a pretty solid laptop, but surely a laptop screen should go bad after just two years.  (Her old Dell is almost ten years old and still works).

So, does this sound like an inverter problem specifically?  If not, what is most likely the cause?

Any (accurate : )  guidance would be appreciated.

It may be worth adding .. when I increase or decrease the brightness, the brightness of the "flashlight" (ie. the bulb) does go up and down.

So I guess I need to know what the failure is if the bulb is good but nothing gets projected on the screen (not even fainly if I shine a flashlight on it in the dark.)

Having the exact same issue - any responses to the above questions. I would like to repair this if it is just the ribbon cable.

I'm not sure if anyone can help or if my HP notebook is experiencing the same problem?. I was bought this as a gift on December 22nd 2010 from Curry's. I last used it (perfect!) on the 11th of December 2011, before returning home to Ireland for Christmas. I called my partner in the UK after New Years, asking if he could switch it on to e-mail me some documents over. He called back to say the screen wasn't working!!! To add insult to injury, of course, Curry's said it's outside the warranty period. After much messing around, they said that the LED screen was gone and it would be 126 pounds to replace it!!! I called HP today who then said that they sell their warranty to Curry's so basically it has nothing to do with them! (a WHOLE different kettle of fish!). But what your saying sounds like it's not the screen at all but an electrical issue and either way, the product is STILL faulty. Any ideas?

Hi ibarbao,

I have the same issue with my dm4 laptop. I've replaced the LCD screen with new ones twice, and I replaced the LCD cable. None of that fixed the problem. Have you had any luck fixing your problem?

I have a pavilion dm3 (also one month out of warranty) and my screen went blank on my two days ago. Works fine connected to an external monitor. Is it likely the same hinge/wire pinch probelm as the dv4?
