Z220
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have a single SATA SSD now, which came with my Z220.  Would like to upgrade the SSD.

Will the Z220 support a pcie ssd?  In other words, can I replace my SATA SSD with a pcie SSD?

I'm confused about the compatibility issues.

You and everybody else is confused. The issue is not whether the pci-e SSD will work or not: it will at a minimum as a storage drive; the real issue is whether it will be bootable and nothing I can find answers that question. Most desktop motherboards that can use a bootable mSSD have an M.2 slot right on the motherboard. M.2 mSSD is basically just a miniaturized version of a pci-e SSD. Your computer does not have a built in M.2 slot. In my experience most proprietary computers i.e. those that are branded like H.P. have a limited set of features and functions and if the manufacturer does not offer a pci-e bootable drive option it will not work. Just my best guess.

HP now offers a pcie SSD, which they call "TurboDrive".  Its datasheet says "The HP Z Turbo Drive is supported on the Z230 SFF, Z230 Tower, Z420, Z620, Z820, Z440, Z640, and Z840."  I presume this means that those models have BIOS support for pcie SSD booting, and that my Z220 does not.

I suppose a BIOS update for the Z220 to support pcie SSD booting is a fantasy.

My next computer will definitely support pcie SSD.
