I bought a dv7 laptop with 9 cell battery. I ordered thru HP.com and saw the power adapter listed as 120w.

Instead I got a 65w and it gets hot when recharging battery. I contacted HP support chat twice and was told this

adapter is compatible with the laptop.

Later, I got an email from support :

90-W, PFC, RC, V HP Smart AC adapter for use with all computer models 609940-001.

65-W RC, V HP Smart AC adapter for use only with computer models equipped with an AMD processor 609939-001.

120-W, PFC, RC, V HP Smart AC adapter for use only with computer models equipped with an Intel processor 609941-001.

90-W, PFC, RC, V, EM HP Smart AC adapter for use only with computer models equipped with an Intel processor 609947-001.

65-W, RC, V, EM HP Smart AC adapter for use only with computer models equipped with an Intel processor 609948-001.

I dont know what to do now ? I do have a new 90w adapter lying - can I use it ?

thanks

All the adapters listed above are compatible with your PC. AC adapter gets hot when in use so it is normal unless it is extreamly hot.

Please do not try to use a thrid party or non-compatible AC adapter with your PC.

get back to us with the product number (p/n) pasted at the bottom of the PC so that i can provide you more accurate information.

584037-001 is what I found on the back - is this what we looking for ?

The 90w adapter is also a HP one. The present 65w get too hot to touch.

These are not correct numbers.... if you cannot find the p/n sticker at the bottom then it should be under battery..... OR

Press Fn + Esc keys you will get it...
the following guide will help you to find the correct info..........

http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00033108

Also if the AC adapter is getting extreamly hot then please contact HP, they will provide you a replacement... but it will be 65W only....

Okay i have checked and verfied that the AC adapterd you listed are supported with your PC... since your PC is a CTO Model i am not able to check taht which AC adapter was shipped with your PC

before you try to use the 90W AC adapter with your notebook i would suggest you to check the following:

Pin size, check whether it is of same size or not.

Power Output, power output must be approximatly same (i.e.18.5V-19V)

You will get power related info on the sticker pasted on the AC adapter.
