Well, I decided to bring it in to my friend's store, he's a tech, and then of course it actually decided it would boot to the OS! It wasn't running healthy though, we tried a refresh but it stopped in the middle of it due to an issue w/the hard drive. After some diagnotics the hard drive was the culprit, so after a swap we are running again. I am fine w/ starting over as long as it's working now. And I called HP ordered my back up disks. Thanks for the help, if I would have had the disks we would have come to the same conclusion I'm sure.

Is the installed operating system Windows 8 or Windows 8.1?

Was there a Microsoft Windows update that happened before you shut down the notebook?

There are a few ways to resolve this.

1) use the recovery media to get to safe mode and use system restore to choose a restore point dated before the issue began.

2) Enter the BIOS. Disable SecureBoot option and enable Legacy boot mode

3) Use the recovery media and perform a factory image recovery. The downside of this is that you will lose all of your data and have to reinstall all programs installed after you setup your notebook.

I have Win 8.1.  I don't have any recovery discs. There were some updates that had automatically installed that's when it shut down. Then it failed to reboot.

OK.

One of the updates is likely to have caused this.

You will need a Windows 8.1 repair flashdrive, Windows 8.1 installation disk or HP recovery media (usb or disk) to get to safe mode and then system restore.

Did you make recovery media? Right now is when it will be handy to have.

Yes, but I am not able to get it to work for some reason. I don't have any other backup or recovery media and it's not available from HP for my model. That's why I'm kinda trying to find my way in the dark so to speak....

What is happening when you try to boot from the recovery media?

After I replaced the hard drive my computer is running great. Turns out that was the problem. I was able to backup all my documents as well, so besides the pain of having to update the OS & download some drivers it was worth it to have a smooth running system again. It could have been a lot worse. My first priority was then to obtain the recovery media. I helped my mom backup her desktop as well. Thanks for the troubleshoot.
