Stream 14
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (32-bit)

The notebook in question(Stream14) belongs to my boss. He is unsure if windows 10 has been put on it.

The symptoms are:

At boot, I get the HP logo, then it asks for the dongle (USB Stick). when this is added, it says 'Trying to recover', then says 'Restoring to previous version of windows. It then reverts back to the HP logo, and constantly repeats the above words. I left it running for over 3 hours thinking it was actually working, but it is just looping.

I have even tried F11, no difference, F9 and chosen the USB stick, no difference. I have searched the USB Stick, and all necessary files appear to be there.

I have even tried booting via a USB DVD drive, using a windows DVD, but it will not boot from the drive, even though I made the DVD drive, the first boot option in BIOS setup.

Any advice??

The recovery partition may have been deleted.  You will need to use use recovery media that has been created specifically for the Stream 14 to reinstall the operating system.

Contact HP warranty support to inquire about ordering a usb recovery flash drive for the Stream 14.

iIf you press the power button and then the Esc key to access the startup menu are you able to press the F11 key to enter the HP Recovery Manager and run a factory image recovery? That should return the Stream back to its factory delivered state.

From what I have read here in the forum, the Stream models can be a bit tricky to upgrade to Windows 10.

It seems, from the description you have given, that your boss may have inadvertently tried that and it failed.

If you want to upgrade it to Windows 10 after the recovery, take a look at the following thread.

Thanks for the response. I have tried your sugestion, but then I get a blue screen sayiny 'Recovery'

Your PC needs to be repaired, a required device isn't connected, or cannot be accessed

Error Code: oxc0000225

Youll nned to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media (which is inserted) contact your system administrator'

I even tried a 'Factory Reset', but just the same thing happens.

It sounds like you need the Windows 8.1 recovery USB created within Control Panel => Recovery to restore it back to the factory configuration.  If this was not created previously when the laptop was working, it can be ordered from HP.

What USB are you inserting now that is not working?

Thanks both.

The USB I am using, is the original one, with the backup on it. I have examined it on my comuter, and it appears to have all the necessary files on it.

I have even created a bootable USB disk, and put the startup files on it (From win 8 installation disc), but it will not boot from that.

I will contact HP and ask about the recovery uSB

Thanks again, I will post after i get it.

OK all,

The USB Recovery arrived yesterday. Followed the insructions perfectly, and the disc was wiped, a new recovery partition added, then it added Windows instal files added to this recovery partition. Then a reboot, and Windows 8 added to C partition, plus all drivers etc added. All in all asmooth operation, but it took just over2 hours start to finish.

My thanks to all who contributed, it's good to know there are people out there who will offer advice.

Regards, and thanks again.
