I am using a HP ENVY 17-2101tx Notebook PC, Windows 7 64 bit. Recently there is a thin red line running down the side of my screen, is there any way i can get rid of it? my mouse overlaps it when placed above the line.

Hello Noobhamster,

I understand you state there is a thin red line that runs down the side of your screen is that accurate? I will do all I can to help you resolve this issue.

What I would like you to do is boot into the bios menu to see if the line appears there, if you’re unsure how to access the bios see the steps below.

Accessing Bios Menu

1.       Turn off your computer and locate the F10 key on the top of the keyboard.

2.       Turn the computer on and immediately start tapping the F10 key.

3.       If successful you should be on the bios setup utility screen

4.       Take a look at the screen and see if the red line is present.

5.       Once you recognize that press F9 to setup defaults and then press F10 to save and exit.

If I have been helpful or if you’d like to say thanks you can click the white star under my name to give me Kudos.  I really appreciate it.

Please respond at your earliest convenience.

Thanks

Hi again, Noobhamster,

Thank you for your immediate response.

Okay that tells me that there is a hardware problem causing this issue. Reason why is because when you’re in the bios menu the computer just uses the most basic drivers it needs, thus not having any interference from other items that might help cause the problem.

Do you know if you are still covered under any type of warranty?

Noobhamster,

Well you have a few options, if you are comfortable you can do the repair yourself. Here is the service manual for your computer, the instructions for the repair start on page 70 it also includes part numbers so that you can get the correct equipment.

Now I know you are out of warranty, but you can still contact the HP help desk and they can possibly provide a quote for the service if you want to go that route. If you reside in the US or Canada the number is 1-800-474-6836, if you reside in another location click on this link and, then select your correct and it the number will be provided.

Last option is you have the ability to check out any local techs in your area to have them repair or provide a quote on the repair.

This is because your computer is running by Fast Search by Surf Canyon

If you disable this your problem of running red line across will be solved

To do this you go to Tools (in your internet browser)

Click on Tools look for Add-ons click on Add-ons

A new screen will open up as Add on Manager

Look for Fast Search by Surf Canyon then click on disable then

Go back in Tools and click on Options

Go to History and cookies then delete all your browsing history and cookies

Then close all programs and restart your computer

Hopefully you want find any annoying red lines across your computer or laptop

Good luck

Bye
