HP Envy 15-J001DX laptop.  System start fails before boot.  System Quick Test shows failure of Hard Drive

Short DST Check ID: PTXEXR-6T289J-MFGJWK-60S503

By most accounts, this is a fatal failure of the drive, but I want to try reinstalling the firmware before I take it to a data recovery service.  The drive in this laptop is a Toshiba MQ01ABD075.  Toshiba doesn't recognize the model no., and a search for firmware from HP only lists a Seagate drive for this laptop model.  Any suggestions?

You are tilting at windmills. The drive is bad. Think in terms of replacing it. If you tried to flash the firmware on a bad hard drive you likely will wreck any chance to recover data from it. Right now data can probably be recovered without involving a data center by simply removing the drive from the laptop and connecting it with a SATA to USB adapter to another computer. The more you mess with it the less likely easy recovery becomes.

A largely useless comment. No, it can't be acccessed with a SATA-to-USB adapter.

If it is so bad it does not show up with a usb to SATA adapter then you are not going to get it to accept a firmware update.

But I somehow think you will keep trying and you really have nothing to lose. If you already know the answer why even ask for help? HP has no firmware update for you. I suggest you check on some hacked firmware sites as somebody may have modified the original firmware for some reason and made it available.
