I have th e HP envy 6-1050eb, it came with windows 7 and my webcam was a dream. the best image ever and very clear. then I installed windows 8.1 on it. now the image of my webcam is so dark and not so sharp as before.

First I would like to commend you for including your exact model on HP notebook and the Operating System.

 

I grasp that after updating to Windows 8.1 your Webcam image is dark and not as sharp as before.

 

Have you checked for software  for driver updates?  Here you run the  The HP Support Assistant to aid with that process.

 

Have you tried running the Windows 8 built in troubleshooter?

Press the Windows key + C to open charms

Type troubleshoot Webcam in the search bar and press enter

Follow the on screen prompts.

 

Here is a link to Webcam Troubleshooting (Windows 😎 that may also help.

 

When I checked the driver download page Windows 8.1 is not listed as a supported Operating System. That simply means it has not been tested on your notebook and there is no updated drivers listed for it. 

If you are still having an issue with the CyberLink YouCam Software here is another one to try.  It is for Windows 8.1 and an Envy notebook, but is not listed specifically for yours.  sp65795.exe.
