Hello!

I just bought a new SSD, Corsair 120GB, and I want to use it as system drive for my HP Envy DV7-7259nr. How can I use the Windows 8 recovery discs to do that? Or...simply...how can I make this change?

Any advice is welcomed!!!

Thanks

Hello Costin.

Which disc did it fail on?

I think this may have failed due to an Intel driver.  For some reason one of the drivers ("Description : USB-IF xHCI USB Host Controller") had a built-in expiration date of 1/1/2013.  This has caused many customers to be unable to perform the recovery.  The work around for this problem is to go into your BIOS and change the year to 2012 and save the changes.  This should allow you to install Windows and after the installation is complete you can change the clock to the correct time.

Let me know if this helps.  Have a most excellent day!  🙂

Hello Costin.  I understand you'd like to install an SSD and recover your operating system.

There is a possibility that you'll need to update your BIOS to properly use an SSD.  To verify this I will need your notebook's product number.  If you're unsure where this number is located take a look at this document

The Recovery Discs are exactly what you'll need in order to reinstall the operating system.  However, you'll also need to instruct the computer to boot from the optical drive first.  Try the following steps.

  1. Reboot your notebook and press F10 until the BIOS loads.
  2. Navigate to the "System Configuration" section.
  3. Look for "Boot Options" or "Boot Order."
  4. Ensure that the optical drive is the first boot device.
  5. Navigate to the "Exit" section and save your changes.
  6. Verify that this works and post the result.

Let me know if you have any further questions.  I hope you have an excellent night!

Hi!

Product number: C6N75UA#ABA

Also, I did used the recovery discs to install windows 8 on my laptop. twice

1. with ssd - error displayed at the 6/6 disc

2. with the factory delivered HDD - works fine, no problem....windows 8 is up!

So, the problem remanis the recovery discs-ssd compatibility...

Waiting for your answer!

Thanks

Hello Costin.

Here is a link to the latest BIOS for your notebook.  This will have to be installed from within Windows.

What is the error that you receive on disc 6 of 6?

If disc 6 of 6 is a "supplemental" disc then you can actually skip this step.  During the recovery process it should ask you if you have any supplemental discs and give you to option to skip.  If you're able to complete the recovery process and boot into WIndows you should then try the following to get the rest of your drivers/software.

  1. Download and install the HP Software Framework.
  2. Download and install HP Support Assistant.
  3. Download and install the HP Recovery Manager.  The only version I could find was for Windows 7 so let me know if this works.
  4. Run HP Support Assistant.  This will gather and install the drivers and software.
  5. Use HP Recovery Manager to reinstall any of the third-party software that came with your notebook.Let me know if this works for you; I'll keep an eye out for your next reply.

There is also the possibility that the discs are damaged.  So, you could contact HP Support and inquire about getting a second set of discs.  If you're in the US/Canada you can call them at 1-800-474-6836.   If you live in another part of the world you'll need to visit HP Support Worldwide to get your region's contact information.

Hi!

I have tried to install win 8 using the recovery discs as you said, but it didn't work. I don't know why, but the steps are not the same like when installing on the factory HDD. No HP Software Installation is displayed when installing on HDD.

On SSD, after installing HP Software and 3 restarts, a popup is displayed saying that the install did not finish correctly; I took the log, and paste it in a PM for you. I hope you received it and cand give me more info about it.

Thanks

Hi again!

I just noticed that the free space on my ssd is too low: about 30GB. Windows 8 with all HP software installed has about 30GB. So can you tell me where is the rest of it? my ssd should be 120GB...

thanks

Hello again Costin.

Due to the way which hard drive manufacturer measure gigabytes compared to the computer you usually have about 93% of the advertised space available.  This article explains why.  So, that means you should have roughly 112GB of storage on a 120GB SSD.  That does seem to imply that you're still missing about 60GB of space.  I have used the application WinDirStat in the past.  It will scan your hard drive and give you a breakdown of what is using your space and where it is store.

Here is a link to their website.

I hope this helps!
