I have been simply holding down the the button to start it up like a desktop but it always starts up when I turn it on by asking if I want safe mode or start windows normally so I wonder if Im doing it wrong?

Pressing the power button to turn it on is correct, but if you are doing that to turn it off-not so good. You should be using the Start orb to open the Shutdown option. It is just to the right in the menu once you click the Start orb. If you see Standby or Hibernate to the right move your cursor over to the arrow and a pop out will disply where you can choose Shutdown.
