why is my computer "chirping" periodically?

The last  few days my computer has been making a periodic "chirping" sound.  Do you have any suggestions?

Can you determine which area the 'chirping' is coming from? Strange noises 'can' indicate a hdd starting to fail, a fan going bad,etc.

That is what my husband thought.  I was thinking that my laptop was getting too warm, so I put it on (of all things!) one of my oven racks to see if the noise would stop.  So far, the noise has stopped.  My laptop seems to be too  new to be having hdd(does that mean the hard drive?) problems, and, I'm afraid I don't know where the "fan" is.  Can I replace a "fan" on a laptop?  My husband replaced one on my older computer, but it was very easy to find. 

I know I am totally out of my element here.

Very creative_an oven rack would help with cooling since it lifts the laptop for better airflow.;) A laptop cooling pad with fan would work even better, I use one all the time with mine.

Sometimes dust or hair gets trapped in the fan.Pick up a can of compressed air and blow out the vent located over the fan.

You should be able to lift the laptop and see the fan spinning under it's vent cover.Of course do not clean it while running, that is just a suggestion to help locate it.

You can replace a laptop fan, though it is harder than on a desktop. The Maintenance & Service Guide may help with that.

If your laptop is still within the standard 1 yr warranty I would Contact HP for service.

Btw,never assume a laptop hdd (hard drive) is too new to fail. I have seen reports of failures here at less than a yr old, though most last longer.Faster hardware in newer laptops generates more heat, and heat is deadly to components.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions.  I will definitely get a "cooling pad" and a can of compressed air.  I've got my fingers crossed that the problem isn't the hard drive!  But I do appreciate your information.....
