Hi, I've had a hard drive failure and the repairer has replaced it but my model has no Windows key imbedded in the motherboard.. I need the recovery media as it was pre installed on my laptop at purchase. HP have suggested I pay $90 for it but as most laptops have the key in the motherboard , I don't see why I should be charged for it.

The key isn't visible when you go into BIOS. Have you tried a tool to retrieve it? OEMKey will retrieve key for Windows 8 and Windows 10.
Btw-your laptop had software on it to make Recovery Media. If you do not make it you have to order from HP and pay.
