HP Enterprise, HP Managed - Perform a Partial Clean or Format Disk to reset the printer c03398779 | For HP and Customer Verbal Use
Last Modified Date: 2019-07-30
Introduction
There are two ways to reset an HP Enterprise or HP Managed printer: Partial Clean and Format Disk. Before performing either reset, it is important to know which data will be erased.
caution:A Partial Clean automatically restores the firmware files from the repository, but all custom settings, PINs, passwords, third-party solutions, firmware files, and the operating system are completely lost. A Format Disk erases the entire disk drive including the repository and the The system is not bootable after this action. Please understand the consequences of using these features before completing either procedure.
- Partial Clean - Recommended when the user needs to reformat the disk drive without having to download new firmware to get the printer to a bootable state.
- Format Disk - Recommended only when an error occurs and the service manual states a Format Disk must be performed to solve the problem.
For more information, see the section below Printer Hard Disk partitions.
Symptoms that might require a Partial Clean or Format Disk include the following:
note:Use the following symptoms as a guide. If you are not sure that a Partial Clean or Format Disk is the right procedure, refer to the service manual to confirm before continuing. You can also try a lower impact reset option. See the section Printer Reset methods.
- The printer hangs (Partial Clean),
- The printer continually boots to an error state (Partial Clean or Format Disk),
- The printer will not respond to commands from the control panel (Partial Clean),
- The printer is experiencing unknown disk drive problems (Partial Clean or Format Disk),
- The printer default settings are not working correctly (Partial Clean),
- The printer needs to be to reset by deleting all solutions and customer data files or defined settings to troubleshoot recurring issues (Partial Clean or Format Disk).
Before you continue
HP recommends backing up printer configuration data before performing a Format Disk if you need to retain customer defined settings. If losing customer settings is a concern, use the Backup/Restore feature to save the settings so they can be restored after a Partial Clean or Format Disk procedure.
caution:The Backup/Restore procedure is the responsibility of the customer and should not be performed by any HP employee. Refer to the product training for more information on this procedure. For instructions, go to Use the backup and store feature now available in FutureSmart version 3.4 before updating the firmwa....
Partial Clean
A Partial Clean is similar to the legacy firmware procedures Disk Initialization and Partial NVRAM Initialization.
A Partial Clean copies over the Active partition including the following actions:
- Erases all partitions and data on the disk drive,
- Erases customer defined settings, third party solutions, firmware files, and the operating system, and
- Automatically reboots and restores the firmware files from the Repository partition (the firmware backup is stored here and is not erased with this procedure).
- Customer defined settings are not restored. See the section Before you continue.
To perform a Partial Clean, use one of the following methods:
Method one: Perform a Partial Clean using the Preboot menu
- Turn the printer ON .
- Press the HP logo that displays in the middle of the screen when you see the “1/8” under the logo.
- Press the Down arrow button to highlight Administrator, and then press the OK button.
- Press the Down arrow button to highlight Partial Clean, and then press the OK button.
- Press the OK button again.
- Press the Back button once to highlight Continue, and then press the OK button.
The printer will automatically reboot and return to a Ready state.
Method two: Perform a Partial Clean using the HP Embedded Web Server
- Print a Configuration Page.
- Locate the IP address or host name on the HP Jetdirect page.
- In a supported Web browser on the computer, type the product IP address or host name in the address/URL field.
- Click the Troubleshooting tab.
- Click Restore Factory Settings .
- Under the Reset Firmware heading, click Reset .
note:
If a Reset Firmware option is not listed, a password must be set up first on the Security tab in the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
The printer will automatically reboot and return to a Ready state.
Format Disk
Make sure to have a USB thumb drive ready with the latest firmware available before performing a Format Disk. After performing a Format Disk procedure, the printer will boot to a 99.09.67 error. This is expected behavior and the firmware must be reloaded to clear this error.
warning:Do not use the Format Disk option unless the solution to a specific error in the printer Service Manual recommends this solution. After performing a Format Disk procedure, the printer is unusable and must have the firmware reloaded.
A Format Disk erases both the Active partition and the Repository including the following actions:
- Erases the entire disk drive and firmware backup,
- Erases all customer defined settings, third party solutions, firmware files, and the operating system,
- Automatically reboots the printer but does not restore the firmware files or customer defined settings. See the section Before you continue.
- Returns a 99.09.67 and requires that the firmware be reloaded to recover the printer.
To perform a Format Disk procedure, follow these steps using the Preboot menu.
Perform a Format Disk using the Preboot menu
- Turn the printer ON .
- Press the HP logo that displays in the middle of the screen when you see the “1/8” under the logo.
- Press the Down arrow button to highlight Administrator, and then press the OK button.
- Press the Down arrow button to highlight Format Disk, and then press the OK button.
- Press the OK button again.
- Wait for the printer to automatically reboot and arrive at a 99.09.67 error.
- Reload the firmware using a USB flash drive. For instructions, go to 99.09.67 Error.
Printer hard disk drive partitions
To understand how the Partial Clean and Format Disk procedures work, and how they are different from legacy devices, it is important to understand the structure of the disk drive.
There are two primary locations on the disk drive where the firmware components and operating system are stored: Active and Repository.
- Active is the location where the firmware and operating system (OS) currently run. The Active location contains the base firmware and all customer settings, PINs, and passwords.
- Repository is the recovery location. The Repository location contains the firmware base and operating system but does not include any customer settings.
If the Active location is damaged, or a Partial Clean was performed, the printer automatically copies over the OS and firmware files from the Repository location and the printer recovers.
If both the Active and Repository locations are damaged, or a Format Disk was performed, then both locations are erased and the error message 99.09.67 displays on the control panel. The printer firmware must be reloaded for the printer to function again. The firmware bundle contains the Windows CE Operating System and the product/peripheral firmware files.
For information on how to recover from a 99.09.67 error, go to 99.09.67 Error.
Printer reset methods
The following tables list the different reset types for HP Enterprise and HP Managed printers and the impact severity to the customer. It also provides descriptions of each reset and what the reset accomplishes.
note:Before performing any printer reset with or for the customer, please communicate the impact of the reset and ask the customer to create a backup. For instructions, go to Use the backup and store feature now available in FutureSmart version 3.4 before updating the firmwa....
