The printer will not do anything without all cartridges installed and fully working.
You cannot adjust the printer itself with only black cartridge installed.
The is correct behavior this this printer - this printer model requires that all cartridges are installed and usable.
Black ink only / Print with only black ink / print with one cartridge / single cartridge

The printers listed in this document cannot print when one ink cartridge is empty.
Your printer is designed to print only when all ink cartridges have ink. Some ink from all the ink cartridges is used in periodic servicing tasks. This helps to prevent issues such as printhead clogs and poor print quality. There is no way to bypass this feature.
