HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301fdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I think i have a lemon. I purchased the 3301fdw printer when i was looking for the old standby MFP477 laser printer, but it was discontinued.  I must say, this one is cumbersome to operate.  I experience jams everytime the paper tray has less that about 1/2 inch of paper left - (it feeds stacks of sheets, instead of singles).

The scan tool sucks too, it will not scan to computer for some reason, so i have to load paper in the feeder and bring up the scan tool on my computer to initiate the scan.  The autofeed always results in cockeyed scanned pages.

Not having a warm and fuzzy time with this HP POS.  It is out of warantee, despite still being new to me (in my mind), or i would be sending it back.

Am I doing something wrong? Or did HP quality slide in recent years and this is par for the course?

thanks,

RL

Hi @Commandcar

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That sounds incredibly frustrating, and I’m really sorry you’re dealing with all of that—especially when you were hoping for something as reliable as the MFP477.

Let’s break this down and see if we can make the experience a little less stressful.

Paper Tray Jams When Low on Paper

This behavior—feeding stacks instead of single sheets—can often be traced to how the pickup rollers interact with the remaining paper.

Here’s what you can try:

  • Keep the tray at least half full during use to maintain consistent pressure.
  • Fan and align the paper stack before loading to reduce sticking.
  • Clean the pickup rollers and separation pad using this official guide:
Cleaning the rollers and separation pad

If the issue persists even with a full tray, the rollers may be worn and need replacing.

Scan to Computer Not Working

If the printer won’t initiate scans from the control panel, it’s likely a communication issue between the printer and your PC.

Try these steps:

  1. Install the full driver package from HP’s site:
HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301fdw Software
  2. Open HP Scan or HP Smart, and ensure “Scan to Computer” is enabled.
  3. If it still doesn’t work, reset the printer and reconfigure the scan settings via the Embedded Web Server: Troubleshooting Scan Issues

Crooked Pages from ADF

Misaligned scans from the auto document feeder are usually caused by:

  • Dust or debris on the ADF rollers
  • Uneven paper loading
  • Worn feed components

Also, make sure the paper guides are snug against the edges of the pages—loose guides can cause skewing.

You’re not doing anything wrong. It’s clear you’ve been patient and thorough, and I really admire that. If you’re still open to troubleshooting, I’ll stick with you until we get this sorted.

Let me know which issue you’d like to tackle first.
