Just purchase a HP Smart Tank 7602 printer, first printer purchase in 13 years.   I have not completed the setup and am not able to print out a test page.  Paper loading is odd.  I typically use 8.5 by 11 inch paper and noticed the tray length doesn't shrink to that length.  I’m guessing the smallest adjustable length is 14.  I pulled the tray out and checked the bottom and the inside and I don't believe the printer tray has an option to reduce to that size.  After looking closer to videos, I noticed people are placing the paper near the front of the tray.  I assume the paper sits in the correct position but am I missing something?

Hi @ahopenow,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Great observation! The HP Smart Tank 7602 paper tray can absolutely handle standard 8.5 x 11-inch (Letter) paper, but the design can feel unusual if you’re used to older printers. Here’s what’s happening and how to load paper correctly:

Tray Design Explained

  • The tray is full-length to accommodate Legal-size paper (8.5 x 14 in).
  • For Letter-size (8.5 x 11 in), you do not shorten the tray; instead, you adjust the blue paper guides so the paper sits snugly near the front edge of the tray.
  • This is normal for the HP Smart Tank series.

How to Load 8.5 x 11 Paper

  1. Pull out the input tray completely.
  2. Place the paper print side down, aligned with the front edge of the tray.
  3. Adjust the blue width and length guides so they lightly touch the paper stack—don’t leave gaps.
  4. Push the tray back in until it clicks.
  5. On the printer screen or HP Smart app, confirm:
    • Paper Size = Letter (8.5 x 11 in)
    • Paper Type = Plain

Why It Feels Odd

  • Older printers often had trays that collapsed to match paper length.
  • The Smart Tank tray stays extended for all sizes, but the guides ensure proper alignment.
