I'm not thinking thr single rolls but the a4 page of labels that should fit in the paoer tray but if I put one in I suspect it won't recog ise paper being in the tray.

Welcome to the HP English Community --
Yes, the printer should print labels.
Enough different kinds of paper are supported that the task should be workable.
The trick is to not overdo the type of label paper.
Better: Sheet of standard white matte labels - Avery (for example)
Not-so-much (Avoid): Clear, colored, or shiny (very glossy) labels, slick backside of paper, and anything that says "Stickers" on the package.
===============================
Load Paper
Load five to eight sheets of paper in the in-take tray.
Top toward the back, print side down.
Unsure about how the labels will print or how they will look?
Test
Mark a piece of plain paper with a X - load the paper into the tray (with other plain paper) as if it is the label paper.
Run the print job - print one sheet of labels on the plain paper.
Check the results.
