The automatic document feeder on our Office Jet 250 has stopped taking up documents for either copying or scanning.  I've tried cleaning the rollers and separator, and I have tried resetting the printer itself.  Still no ADF function.

Hi @Clancy53,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I’m truly sorry to hear your HP OfficeJet 250 Mobile AIO isn’t picking up pages in the ADF That must be incredibly frustrating when you need to scan or copy stacks of documents. Let’s work through this together step by step.

Step 1: Re‑Clean Rollers and Separator Pad

Even slight dust or paper fibers can stop the ADF from picking pages properly.

  1. Power off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Open the ADF cover to expose the rollers and separator pad.
  3. Use a lint‑free cloth dampened with distilled water to gently wipe:
    • The pickup roller (the rubber roller that grabs paper)
    • The separator pad (the pad that helps feed only one sheet at a time)
  4. Leave them open/dry for about 2 minutes, then carefully close the ADF.

Now try scanning again. Even after earlier cleaning, this deep cleaning can feel like giving the printer a fresh start.

Step 2: Do a Full Printer Reset

This clears any internal memory glitches.

  1. With the printer on, unplug the power cable from the wall.
  2. Wait 60 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in directly (avoid power strips).
  4. Power the printer on and test the ADF.

This “hard reset” often fixes issues that a simple power cycle misses.

Step 3: “Floss” the ADF to Remove Hidden Debris

Tiny pieces, like staples, clips, or paper bits, can block the feed.

  1. Open the ADF tray and locate any small foreign items.
  2. Use a length of unfolded cotton dental floss under the ADF cover to gently sweep between the rollers and separator.
  3. Move it in and out slowly to dislodge unseen particles.

This method often resolves feed problems that aren’t visible at first glance.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
