Why can’t I printout an envelope, like I use to?  I just bought my new laptop from HP, the HP 15s-fq2015na.   This is the first time trying to printout an envelope on this new laptop, I can printout letters though, just not an envelope, and I’m using the same HP 2600 series printer I have always had, which printed envelopes.  Please advise.

Hi Dragon-Fur,  I have the HP 2600 inkjet All-In-One series printer, which I have been using for years and printing envelopes with no trouble.  The only thing different is my NEW HP 15s-fq2015na laptop.  I’m using Windows Home & Student 2019 Word, which I just added to this new laptop.

Unknown envelope type / size, printer software installation status

Original Content / post...

  • Have you installed the Full Feature Software (full driver) for your printer?
  • Are you seeing any error message(s) to help narrow down the "can't" ?

Likely done - "just in case" and for "those reading"...

  • Is the printer aware you have loaded envelopes in the printer tray? (EWS)
  • Are the Printing Preferences set to Everyday printing or similar?

General How-to / Setup / Examples

Printer Software...

Use the Easy Start wrapper to install and configure the printer software.

  • Home Page - HP Easy Start
  • Open Category Software and Drivers
  • Topic: Software-Utility
  • Download-and-Save  the current version of the Easy Start wrapper to install your print software
  • If using USB:  Disconnect the USB cable between the printer and computer before installing the software.
  • Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator" to start the installation
  • Select to install the “Full Driver” / “Full Feature Software”
  • If using USB:  Connect the cable when instructed to do so (near the end of the installation process).
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in.

Notes >> Easy Start... The Journey

  1. About 2/3 of the way through the setup, you will be given the opportunity to select the software - select the "Full Driver" set (as opposed to the basic driver or other application).

  1. You can skip / ignore suggestion(s) that you add the HP Account – you’ll need the account at some point, for now, you can skip this suggestion (as many times as it insists it’s a good idea) during the full driver software installation.

  1. If you see it, you can skip / ignore suggestion(s) regarding Instant Ink subscription.  Instant Ink subscription is NOT mandatory.

  1. Full driver provides print and scan functions supported by your printer.

HP DeskJet 2600 All-in-One Printer series

Dragon-Fur

HP Recommended

Hi Dragon-Fur, thanks for the stuff you sent me, I'm still trying some of it out.  This afternoon I took out my old SLOW HP Notebook-14-bs057sa laptop, and hold and below, it printed out envelopes, but the new laptop, an HP 15s-fq2015na Full-HD Laptop-Core i still could printout an envelope, so it can't be my printer, a HP 2600 all-in-one series that is at fault.  When I looked into the Mailing settings in my newly bought Windows Office Home & Students 2019 version on my New laptop, the only difference was the Clockwise Rotation section was not selected, as it was in my old laptop, but even when I did select it, it made no difference.   I suppose I will have to get use to hand writting my addresses now, unless I eventually get it working,  All the best Vindi62

Unknown envelope type / size, printer software installation status.

Original Content / post...

You are welcome.

Generally,

The "new" computer is only aware of the software and settings used to control and support the printer (as it would other devices).    Windows controls and provides access to software, programs, and the devices connected or installed in the Operating System.  Hardware is important but it controls very little other than providing physical access to the Windows Operating System and the software / programs you use to interact with the computer and other devices on your network.

In so much that I am aware, once Windows Updates have been a sufficient number of times to update the new computer - and those updates include whatever software updates that are necessary for your Office Products, that part is done.

Another major factor is the printer software (full driver).  Printer software must be installed to provide access to the full range of features available for the printer.

The Printer Firmware should be kept updated.  It is unlikely your printer Firmware is outdated - at this writing, the most recent firmware update was June 2020.  Worth checking but not worth obsessing over.

Envelope size limitation note (likely not related to your current situation and mentioned only as FYI)

Although size restriction has no impact at all on printing supported envelope sizes,

Envelopes do include minimum size limitations.

Envelope size restriction are a bit different from the supported custom paper size limitation (which is usually smaller than the smallest allowed envelope size).

For example, if you try to print a custom sized envelope and that custom size is below the minimum supported size for width and / or height, the job will fail.  The software will provide a "change" to a size that it can support.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mystery size envelope - No details available

If there is any error, or any indication of what is not working, the message, reaction (or lack of one) could be helpful to perhaps find and correct the problem.

"Can't" is a rather large category of failure.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As a means to filter out any spurious issues that the doctor can correct,

Try / Consider

Resource – Choose the right doctor for the job

Open Website

HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows

Click the orange Download Now option / box

Wait!

If the problem / issue is one of

  • Printer is Offline
  • Cannot print in Color
  • Duplex printing has disappeared

THEN

Select / Answer question “Is print offline?” = YES

Answering Yes selects the “right doctor” version for these issues.

NOTES – The “Offline” doctor

As a result of repairing issues,

Offline / Color check / Duplex check version of the Doctor may replace the printer or add a “(Copy 1)” version of the driver in Devices and Printers.

Open Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Right-Click on the printer name > Printer Properties > Tab General >

In the top box, Edit the name of the printer (For example, remove “Copy 1”)

Click Apply / OK to save change

NOTE:  The name change may take a bit of time (a few minutes), else Restart the computer and log in.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Verify results.  If necessary, set the newly added / renamed printer as the default.

A secondary “Scan” printer may be added, that is, the “Do not Delete” driver / printer.  As it says, do not delete the entry.
