Hi   @Dionne9,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I completely understand how  it can be when the carriage jam message won’t clear even after following the official steps.

Let’s work through this together and see if we can get your printer back on track.

Could you please share the exact printer model number ?

In the meantime, here are a few specific steps you can try beyond the standard guidance:

  1. Power reset: Turn off the printer, unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet, wait at least 60 seconds, then reconnect and power it back on. This clears residual error states.
  2. Manual carriage check: Open the carriage access door and gently move the carriage left and right. If it’s stuck, check for tiny scraps of paper or obstructions along the carriage path.
  3. Check ink cartridges: Remove the cartridges, inspect them for debris or tape, then reseat them firmly. Sometimes misaligned cartridges trigger carriage errors.
  4. Clean carriage rod: If you notice resistance when sliding the carriage, lightly wipe the metal rod with a lint-free cloth, then move the carriage back and forth to spread lubrication.
  5. Update firmware: Outdated firmware can cause persistent error messages. Check HP’s support website  https://support.hp.com/ for the latest update for your model.

I hope this helps.

Hi @Dionne9

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for letting us know that you’ve already tried the guidance available on the HP site. It’s helpful to hear that those steps were attempted.

To move forward, could you share a few details about your printer? For example:

  • The exact model name or number
  • Whether the carriage jam message appears immediately when powering on, or only during printing
  • Any unusual sounds or movements you notice from the carriage

This information will help us understand the situation more clearly and guide you with the most appropriate next steps.

We're looking forward to helping you get back up and running!

Regards,

Hawks_Eye

HP 7740 Officejet Pro - I bought it in 2017, but it has been working fine until yesterday morning.

I recently started getting a Carriage Jam message on my envy 5055. Nothing was printing at the time, there is no paper jam anywhere, and I have cleaned all the rollers with an alcohol swab.

However after doing some troubleshooting, the error goes away when one of the cartridges is removed and it operates in single cartridge mode. It doesn’t matter whether I remove the colour cartridge or the black cartridge, as long as there is only one installed, it doesn’t throw an error. However as soon as I reinstall the second cartridge, it resumes the carriage jam error.

I am using genuine HP instant ink cartridges that haven’t been swapped out in probably over 2 years.

I have followed all these steps. Multiple power cycles. The carriage slides freely on its full travel left to right and I wiped down any excess lubricant. I’ve inspected the cartridges and cleaned them, they seat properly into the carriage with no issues, only thing I noticed is they are both expired. I’ve ordered replacement instant ink cartridges under defective replacement to see if that helps. Firmware is up to date.

Like I mentioned the strange thing is there are no errors when just one cartridge (either one) is installed, but as soon as the second is installed it gives a carriage jam error.
