I keep getting a paper jam message to clear the jam and press ok. I can find no paper stuck in the machine needing removal. What can I do to reset and proceed. When I power off and unplug and then replug it in I continue to get the same message/situation

Hi @tmeyerabc

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your printer is stuck in a paper jam state, even though there's no paper visibly stuck in the machine. This can happen due to a few reasons, such as sensors being blocked or misaligned, or the printer software incorrectly detecting a jam. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to troubleshoot and potentially fix this issue:

1. Check for Paper Stuck in Hidden Areas

Even though you can’t see paper stuck in the main paper feed or output tray, there may still be small bits of paper or debris hidden in areas like the rollers, inside the printer mechanism, or the rear access panel (if your printer has one).

  • Check the paper feed path: Open all access panels of your printer, including the rear panel, the top lid, or any other removable parts, and look carefully for small pieces of paper.
  • Inspect the rollers: If you can see or feel the rollers (the rubber wheels that feed the paper), check for any paper scraps that may be stuck in or around them.

2. Clear the Printer's Paper Feed Rollers

If small bits of paper or dust have gotten stuck on the rollers, it can trigger the paper jam error. Try gently wiping the rollers with a lint-free cloth that’s slightly dampened with water or rubbing alcohol. Be sure to rotate the rollers by hand if you can to ensure they're cleaned thoroughly.

3. Reset the Printer

If there’s no visible paper, but the printer keeps giving you a jam error, try to perform a reset:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall.
  • Wait for at least 1-2 minutes to ensure the printer fully powers down.
  • While the printer is unplugged, gently press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds. This can help clear any residual power and reset the printer’s internal sensors.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

4. Check the Paper Tray Alignment

Sometimes, a misaligned paper tray or incorrectly loaded paper can cause the printer to think there’s a jam.

  • Remove the paper tray and ensure the paper is correctly aligned and stacked. The edges should be squared, and there shouldn’t be any torn or creased paper.
  • Reload the paper and make sure it’s not overfilled, as too much paper can cause the printer to misinterpret a jam.
  • Try printing a test page after reloading the paper.

I hope this helps.
