HP Photosmart 5510 e-All-in-One Printer - B111a

Hello!

Printer: HP Photosmart 5510 all in one

I'm trying to print myself some coloring pages, so I got 67lb Cardstock (147gsm) from Walmart. From the searching I did, it looked like that would be compatible. I've gone to print a few times and each time the printer is making some not fun noises and either only prints a small part of the design or none of it (I chose a simple design to test). So I'm wondering if the cardstock I got is actually too heavy, or if there's some settings somewhere that I need to change (I tried plain paper and photo paper settings)? If it's too heavy, what's the heaviest cardstock I can use?

Thanks for your help!

Welcome to the HP English Community --

Yes, "Card paper" in this weight category is likely compatible.

No, the paper is not too heavy.

Printer - Tray and Paper

Next,

Yes, the issue could be a setting.

The challenge is whether the paper size and paper type are supported as a "matched set" across the printer and the job configuration setup.

That is,

The paper weight is supported (as Index paper) --

The paper size is a question mark (not provided)

The paper type must be able to be selected with the paper size.

Just to make it more complicated, the printer settings for paper size and type are not always a direct cross-over match to what you find in the job settings.

What to do?

I can tell you where you might look.

Whether it helps depends on what you find and how you can adjust the settings.

Open

User Guide

Load Paper - Starting on Page 10

Next,

Right after the paper tray is closed,

Check on the printer control panel for a message to accept or change the paper size / type.

OR

If the printer is on the network,

Try using the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to view and adjust Tray Paper

EWS > HP Document / How-to (Original Format)

Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

NOTE:  Find printer IP address

Section Open the EWS over a local network orientation

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

EWS – Tray and Paper Management

Original EWS

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper (Management)

Select / Adjust settings for Paper Size / Type

Click Apply to save changes

Thank you for all this info, I appreciate it!

Paper is normal letter size cardstock. The issue I'm hitting now is the EWS doesn't look at all like you mentioned and there isn't anything about Paper/Tray under Preferences. The printer also did not show any message about accepting the paper once I loaded it (I did pull out the tray and load as shown in the guide).

I have never used the IP address set 10.x.x.x -

That said, the odd response might simply be that the printer is too old to respond that way I'd expect.

?

So - I don't know.

The printer software for Windows is available but is also nearly as old as dirt.

That might make a difference on how the settings are adjusted though the fact that there is full driver printer software at all does mean that the essentials are supported.

One thing you'll notice in the Specifications is that card paper is presumably supported in only a few small sizes.

That would mean there is perhaps no way to designate the paper type in the printer settings.

So - I don't know - twice.

Someone with a better understanding of your vintage printer model might be better able to provide useful help, I think.

If I discover anything useful, I'll post back.
