Hi @gilbertpries,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I completely understand how frustrating this must feel when you’re excited to set up your new HP Smart Tank 5102 and the paper guide just refuses to budge beyond 4x6". It’s like the printer is stuck in postcard mode when you need full-size pages! Let’s fix this so you can load your 8.5 x 11" paper and start printing smoothly.

Steps to Fix

  1. Power Off and Check for Packing Material
    • Turn off the printer and remove the input tray completely.
    • Look for any orange tape, foam, or cardboard inside the tray or around the guide.

  2. Locate the Release Latch
    • On the left side of the paper width guide, there’s a small latch or tab.
    • Press this gently while sliding the guide outward. It should move freely once the latch is released.

  3. Extend the Guide
    • Slide the guide all the way to the edge of the tray.
    • Load your 8.5 x 11" paper with the print side facing down.
    • Adjust the guide snugly against the paper stack; don’t force it too tightly.

  4. Reinsert the Tray and Test
    • Push the tray back in until it clicks.
    • Power on the printer and print a test page.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
