HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 All-in-One Printer

See picture below.  I've followed all these steps: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_12260669-12260722-16

The printer also doesn't recognize there is a jam.

Is there anything else I can try on my own?

@sclemente, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

Based on the visual evidence and your description, here's a detailed response to help resolve the paper jam issue on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8730, especially since the printer isn't detecting the jam:

  • The paper is visibly crumpled near the printhead assembly, likely during the output phase.
  • The printer does not detect the jam, which suggests the jam is post-sensor, possibly in the output tray or duplexer path.

Steps to Resolve the Jam

Remove All Loose Paper

  • Power off the printer.
  • Open all accessible doors (front, rear, and output tray).
  • Gently pull out any visible jammed paper without tearing.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect deep areas like the duplexer and rear access panel.

Clean the Paper Path and Rollers

  • Follow this HP guide: Clean the rollers | HP® Support
  • Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water.
  • Focus on:
    • Output rollers
    • Duplexer rollers
    • Rear rollers

Check the Duplexer (Rear Access Door)

  • Remove the duplexer unit (if installed).
  • Inspect for any paper fragments or debris.
  • Clean rollers inside the duplexer.

Reset the Printer

  • Disconnect power while the printer is ON.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect and power ON.
  • This may help the printer reinitialize and detect any remaining jam.

Update Firmware

If the Issue Persists

If the printer still fails to detect the jam or jams repeatedly in the same spot:

Try a Printer Hardware Diagnostic

  • Use the HP Smart App

Inspect for Mechanical Obstructions

  • Check for:
    • Broken plastic guides
    • Misaligned output tray
    • Ink cartridge carriage obstruction

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it may be a sensor or mechanical failure. In that case, please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.

Hi Max, thanks for the reply.  I've performed all the above steps but these:

  • Check for:
    • Broken plastic guides
    • Misaligned output tray
    • Ink cartridge carriage obstruction

Is there a diagram of all plastic guides that I should see?

How can I tell if an output tray is misaligned?
