Hey HP,

I have a problem with my HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw. It frequently shows the paper jam error in Tray 2. I've already opened all the panels and meticulously searched for paper fragments, but couldn't find any. I've checked for sensors in Tray 2, cleaned them with alcohol, and used compressed air on them. I did the same with the flap at the back of the device. Sometimes the error disappears, and I can print a few pages. Does anyone know this issue with the printer and can help me? I've tried pretty much everything that HP recommends or what's suggested online. It's quite frustrating since the printer isn't that old.

regards

Hi @Wow0R

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

This issue is often caused by a misaligned or faulty sensor in Tray 2, or by subtle mechanical wear that triggers false jam alerts—even when no paper is present. Cleaning helps temporarily, but a deeper reset or part replacement may be needed.

You've already done an excellent job with the basics: clearing debris, cleaning sensors, and checking the rear flap. Since the error is intermittent and sometimes clears, it’s likely a false jam detection rather than a true blockage. Here’s how to go further:

Advanced steps to resolve Tray 2 paper jam error:

1. Reset the printer completely

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from power.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • While unplugged, remove Tray 2 and inspect the rollers and feed path again.
  • Reinsert Tray 2 firmly and plug the printer back in.

2. Check for roller wear or misalignment

  • Remove Tray 2 and inspect the pickup rollers and separation pad.
  • If the rollers are shiny, worn, or misaligned, they may fail to grip paper properly.
  • HP offers a Tray 2 Roller Replacement Kit for this model.

3. Inspect the rear duplex flap and output bin

  • Open the rear door and gently press the duplex flap.
  • Make sure it moves freely and isn’t stuck or warped.
  • Also check the output bin sensor—false jams can originate here.

4. Update printer firmware

  • Visit: HP M283fdw Firmware Update
  • Download and install the latest firmware for your printer.
  • Firmware updates often resolve sensor logic and false jam detection.

5. Run HP’s official jam troubleshooting guide

If the issue persists after these steps, I recommend contacting HP Support to request a service evaluation—especially if the printer is still under warranty. Let me know if you'd like help checking warranty status or locating replacement parts.
