HP DeskJet 4175e All-in-One Printer

After over a year of successful printing with my HP Deskjet 4175e All in One Printer, I attempted to print a 4 x 6 photo using Microsoft Photo App, HP ink, and HP photo paper (4 x 6 gloss).  I loaded only the 4 x 6 paper and the first attempt resulted in the printer starting to feed, then printing a couple of passes, then stop with paper jam error.  I followed documented troubleshooting procedures and was unable to find the photopaper that had fed into the printer.  I went through the online trouble shooting procedures with no resulting fix.  I then attempted to print a second photo and  making sure all of my size selections were matched (they were). and began a second print.  Same thing happened and I could NOT find the 4 x 6 paper.

At this point, I selected the letter size paper and removed the supply of photo paper and installed several sheets of 8.5 x 11 HP standard paper.  I tried to print a document and the paper began to feed and a few strokes of the ink carriage occurred then printing stopped with a paper jam error.  I was able to carefully pull the 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper out.  I spent an hour or so, searching all available orfices, slots, and accessible areas in the printer case, document feeder etc. and could NOT find either of the two photo papers that I had attemtped to print.   I then, again, went step by step through all available support videos, third party videos, and other HP and off line documentation with NO results of finding the lost paper.

I then uninstalled the printer driver and reinstalled my printer from scratch with the latest drivers.  I also check the internal visible areas for the lost paper and have yet to find those two lost photo papers.

The next day, I started my printer and printed an Information Page which printed satisfactorily.  I printed a TEST page and the result was satisfactory.   I then printed two photos (4 x 6) and they both printed satisfactorily except one had slight black streaks on the backside from ink.

It is not cost effective to return this printer to a service center for repairs.  (Out of Warranty 6 months ago).

I am curious as to how to disassemble the printer to the point of being able to expose the lost paper and make sure the paper path is completely unobstructed.  I am good at repairing my own equipment but some guidance would help.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful and appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi @capnbob1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've done a thorough job troubleshooting your HP Deskjet 4175e printer. Here are a few additional steps and suggestions to help you locate and remove the jammed photo paper.

Thorough Paper Jam Check

  1. Power Off and Unplug: Make sure the printer is powered off and unplugged before you start.
  2. Rear Access Door: Open the rear access door or duplexer (if applicable) to check for any paper that might be jammed in the rollers.
  3. Paper Path: Use a flashlight to carefully inspect the entire paper path, including the rollers and feeder areas. Look for any small pieces of paper that might be causing the jam.
  4. Paper Tray: Remove and inspect the paper tray for any bits of paper stuck in the feed mechanism.
  5. Front Access Door: Open the front access door to check for any paper lodged near the printhead and ink carriage area.

Manual Paper Removal

If you can't locate the jammed paper through the normal access points, you might need to disassemble the printer. Here's a general guide on how to disassemble an HP Deskjet printer:

  1. Remove External Components: Start by removing any external components, such as the paper tray, ink cartridges, and any removable covers.
  2. Screws and Clips: Look for screws and plastic clips holding the printer casing together. These are usually located on the bottom and back of the printer. Carefully remove these screws.
  3. Separate the Case: Gently pry apart the printer casing using a plastic tool or flathead screwdriver. Be careful not to damage any internal components.
  4. Inspect Internal Areas: Once the case is open, inspect the internal areas for any jammed paper. Check the rollers, printhead carriage, and any other accessible parts.
  5. Remove Jammed Paper: If you locate the jammed paper, carefully remove it without tearing it. Use tweezers if necessary to grasp small pieces.

Cleaning and Reassembly

  1. Clean Rollers: While the printer is open, clean the rollers with a lint-free cloth and some isopropyl alcohol to ensure smooth paper feeding.
  2. Reassemble the Printer: Once you've removed all jammed paper, carefully reassemble the printer by reversing the disassembly steps.
  3. Test Printing: Plug in the printer, power it on, and perform a test print to ensure everything is functioning correctly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Lost paper found.  I told a friend about my problem with the lost paper and he suggested I look behind and below my printer location for the paper.  The area below my printer is in the corner of the room, walls on two sides, file cabinet under desk and a carton of printer paper adjacent to the file cabinet.  I was able to look down behind the desk all the way to the floor and there I found the two photo papers.  They must have been "launched" upward and then to the side of the printer for them to land on the floor where they did.  My printer's back and bottom are not exposed in any way but small slots for ventilation.

After all my troubleshooting, testing the printer, etc, now my ink supply warns me that "ink is low" yet my Ink subscription has not sent me new cartriges.
