Error message appears after the printer claims there is a paper jam, but there is no jam.  It has happened several times that the printer is printing fine and then suddenly stops b/c paper is “jammed” and it’s not.  Now it is stuck with the error message and won’t even turn off.  How do I clear it to make it function again?

Hi @JVar1 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are getting the 0x6100004a error on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6975 is usually related to a carriage or printhead issue, often triggered by a false paper jam. Since your printer is now stuck with the error and won’t turn off, follow these steps to reset and clear it:

Step 1: Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Disconnect the power cord from the printer while it is still on.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait 2-3 minutes to allow the printer’s internal memory to clear.
  4. Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid power strips or surge protectors).
  5. Reconnect the power cord to the printer and turn it on.

If the printer turns on without the error, try printing a test page.

Step 2: Check for Obstructions in the Paper Path

Even though there's no visible paper jam, there might be small bits of paper or debris inside the printer:

  1. Open the front cover and remove the ink cartridges.
  2. Manually move the printhead carriage side to side to see if it moves freely.
  3. Check inside the printer for any tiny scraps of paper or foreign objects.
  4. Use a flashlight to look deep inside the paper path and remove anything obstructing the rollers.

Step 3: Reset the Ink Cartridges

Sometimes the ink cartridges can cause printhead-related errors:

  1. Remove all ink cartridges.
  2. With the cartridges removed, unplug the printer again and wait for 60 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in and turn it on without inserting the cartridges.
  4. If prompted, insert the ink cartridges one at a time.

Step 4: Perform a Semi-Full Reset

If the above steps don’t work, you may need to reset the printer’s internal firmware:

  1. On the printer’s touchscreen, press Back (←) four times in a row to open the Support Menu.
  2. Select Reset Menu > Semi-Full Reset.
  3. The printer will restart and return to factory defaults.

Step 5: Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

If the error keeps returning:

  • Download the latest firmware update for your printer from HP’s support site.
  • Install it via USB or HP Smart App.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello,

I have the same issue, but our printhead carriage only moves for a bit and then gets stuck before making it all the way to the center.  What could be causing this issue, and how do we get it fixed?  Thank you.
