The HP Smart Tank 7602 feeder does not work correctly.  It continues to pull more than one sheet of paper at a time.  This results in printing half a page on one sheet and the other half on the next sheet of paper.  Sometimes the two sheets are directly on top of each other which leaves a blank sheet in the output tray.  However, this is frustrating when printing jobs.

This has been an on going problem and does not seem to matter what type of paper or the quality of paper.

The paper tray does not seem to be designed correctly to hold standard 8.5 x 11 paper because there is over an inch of space left in the length of the tray that the paper is not held.

@cch13, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating paper-feeding issue on your HP Smart Tank 7602. HP printers can sometimes experience problems with the paper feed mechanism, but there are a few steps you can try to fix this. Here’s what you can do to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the problem:

Check for Paper Jam or Obstructions

Sometimes paper jams or debris inside the printer can cause the feeder to pull more than one sheet at a time.

Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.

Open the paper tray and access door to check for any paper jams or debris inside the feed path.

Remove any jammed paper or foreign objects you find.

Clean the rollers (the small rubber wheels that pick up the paper) gently with a lint-free cloth and some water, or use a soft cloth to remove any dust or debris that may be causing the multiple sheets to feed at once.

Inspect the Paper Tray

It sounds like the paper tray isn’t holding the paper properly. If the paper tray is not properly aligned or doesn't securely hold the paper, it can cause inconsistent feeding.

Ensure that the paper is aligned properly in the tray. The paper should sit flush against the edge of the tray and be aligned correctly in both length and width.

Make sure the paper guides in the tray are snug against the edges of the paper, but not too tight. If the guides are too loose, the paper can shift and cause misfeeding.

Check the tray for damage. If the tray is warped or damaged in any way, this could be causing the issue. In this case, you might need to replace the paper tray.

Adjust Paper Settings

If you are printing a specific type of document, make sure your printer settings match the paper you're using.

On your computer, go to Printer Properties or Print Settings before printing.

Ensure the paper size is set to "8.5 x 11" (Letter size) and that the paper type matches what you have loaded (such as plain paper).

Set the paper type to Plain or Standard for regular printing to avoid issues with paper feeding.

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

It seems that the paper tray isn’t holding the paper properly.  Please see the pictures attached that show the paper in the tray.

There is significant gap between the 8.5x11 paper and the tray.
