Hi @Eric1237,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The E4 error code on HP printers typically indicates a paper jam, but as you mentioned, there’s no visible jam, which suggests the issue may be with a sensor misreadpaper feed rollers, or residual bits of paper.

1. Power Reset the Printer

This clears temporary errors.

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug it from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Plug it back in directly to a wall outlet (not a surge protector).
  5. Turn the printer back on.

2. Inspect All Paper Paths

Even a tiny scrap of paper can trigger the E4 error.

  • Open the main paper trayrear access door, and cartridge access area.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect for:
    • Small bits of torn paper
    • Dust or debris
    • Misaligned rollers or paper guides

3. Clean the Paper Feed Rollers

Dusty or worn rollers can cause false jam errors.

  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Gently clean the rollers in the rear and input tray areas.
  • Let them dry for 10 minutes before powering on.

4. Check for Sensor Obstruction

Some HP models have a paper sensor flag that can get stuck.

  • Look for a small plastic lever near the paper path.
  • Gently move it to ensure it’s not jammed or broken.

5. Update Firmware

Outdated firmware can cause false error codes.
