Hi @Anne20231,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're encountering a "Scan Unit Open or Exit Jam" message on your HP Color Laser MFP 179fnw and there's no visible paper jam, try the following steps.

Check the Scan Unit:

  • Open the scanner lid and ensure that the scan unit is properly seated. Sometimes, the message appears if the scanner lid isn't closed properly.

Inspect for Obstructions:

  • Look inside the scanner area and the paper path for any obstructions or debris that might be causing the issue.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes clear temporary errors.

Close All Doors and Covers:

  • Make sure that all doors and covers, including the output bin and paper trays, are securely closed.

Check Paper Path:

  • Even though there’s no visible jam, gently run your hand along the paper path to ensure there's no hidden paper or debris.

Clean the Rollers:

  • Dust or debris on the rollers can sometimes cause issues. Use a lint-free cloth to gently clean the rollers in the paper path.

Perform a Test Scan:

  • Try performing a test scan to see if the error message persists. This can sometimes help to reset the scanner's status.

Consult the Manual:

  • Refer to the printer's manual for any specific troubleshooting steps related to scan unit errors.

Firmware Update:

  • Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. Sometimes, updates can resolve such issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
