Hi @Dana2112,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Carriage Jam on HP Officejet 6958!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Clear Any Paper Jams:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
  • Open the printer to access the paper path and check for any paper that might be jammed inside. Remove any paper and check that no small pieces are left inside.
  • Make sure the paper path is clear of all foreign objects.

Inspect and Clear the Carriage Path:

  • After opening the printer, make sure the ink carriage is not obstructed.
  • Gently push the carriage to the left side and then the right to ensure it moves freely.
  • Remove any objects or paper blocking the carriage paths, being careful not to use any tools to avoid damaging the printer.

Check the Printhead Latch:

  • Ensure the printhead latch is properly closed. Instruct not to open it unless necessary.

Restart the Printer:

  • Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.
  • Try printing a self-test page by navigating to the printer's control panel, pressing the Setup button, and following these steps:
    • Use the arrow buttons to navigate to "Print Report" and press OK.
    • Select "Self-Test Report" and press OK again.

I hope this helps.

How do I check the printhead latch?

the ink carriage is not moving and nothing is in the way. I have tried cleaning, turning off on, etc. clean and align the printhead and it won’t align because it can’t print the paper that’s needed

Hi @Dana2112,

Thank you for getting back to us and for trying those steps already. Let’s focus on the printhead latch and the carriage issue you’re facing.

Checking the Printhead Latch:

Make sure the printer is turned on.

Open the ink cartridge access door.

The printhead latch is located just above the ink cartridges. It looks like a gray lever that secures the printhead in place.

If the latch is up, gently press it down until it snaps into the locked position.

If it’s already down, leave it as it is.

If the Carriage Is Still Not Moving:

With the printer on, unplug the power cord directly from the printer (this ensures the carriage is unlocked).

Gently move the carriage manually to the center. If it feels stuck, check carefully along the carriage path again for any tiny bits of paper or obstructions.

Plug the printer back in and power it on to see if the carriage moves automatically.

I hope this helps.
