I have had two Laser Jet Pro MFP M479fdw printers.  The first one burned out after about 18 months when I was in the middle of project.  Due to a very short time frame, I replaced it with a brand new identical unit.  The document feeder on the first one, from day one, right out of the box, constantly picked up multiple sheets of paper, sometimes five or six pages at a time.  The document feeder on the new one does EXACTLY the same thing.  I have to crinkle (mutilate) the leading edges of the sheets in order to get it to work properly - and even that doesn't always work.  It is extremely frustrating.  This must be a very common problem, is there any solution?

I have not seen this issue out of the box on any 479s we have sold, numbering in the hundreds so I do not think it is endemic with this model. If you were having that many problems from the start, I am puzzled why you did not get it repaired. This device has an onsite warranty so HP or an HP service partner would come to your location to repair. If you are "burning out" a unit in 18 months you are probably buying the device for your application. While fanning the pages to be scanned is common, there should be no need to mutilate the pages, unless you are attempting to feed paper that is outside the supported paper types.
