I have run through all the steps suggested for clearing a paper jam, but to no avail. When I lift the top of the machine, I can see a sheet of paper wrapped around a roller, but I cannot get at it either from the rear or front of the printer. I would prefer not to wreck the printer in my vain attempts to remove it!

Most common type of jam would be a fuser wrap and the safest way to remove those jams is to take the fuser out. You are correct that it is very easy to damage the fuser assembly. There are several videos on Youtube on how to remove or replace the fuser on this model and that is a good place to look for guidance.
