We have a printer that is making a mechanical noises, sounds like a tapping or clacking, when it feeds paper.

We've been told that this printer "fades out" or becomes unreadable after a few pages.

I have not been able to verify the print quality issues yet, but I can confirm the racket.  Sounds to me like a gear that is turning against something that isn't moving, and it "snaps" from one tooth to the next.

Is there any guide to opening these up to look for mechanical faults? The printer normally lives under a cash register, so I wouldn't be surprised to find some loose change.

There does not appear to be a published service manual for this product. These devices were designed to just be replaced with another unit in case of failure under warranty.

If you have a spare toner and drum unit I would test that first, common cause of noise.
