My HP Smart Tank 7300 printer keeps showing E4 error although all procedures to solve paperjams have been done (referring to virtual assistants and online tutorials)

Last step to unplug and plug back in after 2min does not bring solution.

There are absolutely no paper remainders in the printer.

Any idea what I should do? Our helpdesk does not work in the weekends... and I need to print.

Thanks a lot in advance !

Hi @TDEC1

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it is to see the E4 error persist even after carefully checking for paper jams and following restart steps. You’ve already done the right troubleshooting, so let’s go deeper into what can help clear this error on your HP Smart Tank 7300.

Step-by-step actions

Check paper path thoroughly

  • Open all access doors, including the rear access if available.
  • Remove the paper tray and check the feed rollers.
  • Even tiny scraps or dust can trigger the jam sensor. Use a flashlight to inspect closely.

Clean the paper feed rollers

  • Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
  • Dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water.
  • Gently wipe the rollers inside the tray area and rear access.
  • Allow them to dry fully before reconnecting power.

Reload paper correctly

  • Fan the stack of paper to prevent sheets from sticking.
  • Ensure the paper guides are snug against the stack without bending the paper.
  • Avoid overloading—try 20–30 sheets at a time.

Run paper path cleaning

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Settings → Printer Maintenance → Clean Paper Path.
  • This helps clear dust or debris that may cause false jam errors.

Update firmware

  • Open the HP App on your Windows PC.
  • Go to Settings → Printer Update.
  • Install any available updates to ensure the printer’s sensors and feed system are optimized.

Reset the printer system

  • With the printer powered on, disconnect the power cord.
  • Hold the power button for 15 seconds to discharge residual power.
  • Reconnect and restart the printer.

You’ve already shown persistence by checking for jams and restarting. If after cleaning the rollers and updating firmware the E4 error still appears, it points to a sensor or feed mechanism fault. Would you like me to walk you through the roller cleaning process step by step, so you can try that safely before the helpdesk reopens?
