Hi @TH49OW2Q9,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Smart Tank 585 is showing the E4 error, and it is only taking plain paper while trying to print or photocopy. Let’s go through a few steps before arranging a service visit.

1. Check Paper Tray & Paper Type

Make sure the paper is loaded correctly in the input tray.

Use plain A4 paper and avoid any damaged, curled, or wet sheets.

Align the paper guides so they lightly touch the edges of the stack.

2. Clear Any Paper Jam

Open all access covers (front, back, and ink cartridge area) and check for small scraps of paper or debris.

Even tiny pieces can trigger the E4 error.

3. Check the Output Area

Ensure the output tray is not full and the paper path is clear.

4. Reset the Printer

Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.

Wait for 60 seconds, then plug it back in and power on.

5. Check for Firmware Updates

If the printer powers on normally, open HP Smart on your PC or phone and check for any firmware updates.

Updated firmware can sometimes resolve persistent errors.

I hope this helps.
