HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g
Microsoft Windows 11

I have a Officejet Pro 8600 plus for 14 years and have had no problems. But, now I get a paper jam message on the display. Checked all over and can't find any paper jam.  Power off and on unit and same Paper Jam message appears. The ink cartiridge does not move when I open the access door either. Before I got the message heard  binding noise. Do you think there is a gear problem?

@DCNative, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're seeing a "Paper Jam" error on your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer (N911g), even though you can't locate any jammed paper. You've also mentioned a binding noise and that the ink carriage doesn't move, these are important clues.

Let’s walk through some steps to troubleshoot this issue:

Step 1: Check All Paper Path Areas Thoroughly

Even small scraps of paper or debris can trigger a jam error. Please check the following areas carefully:

Rear Access Door:

  • Remove the rear access panel.
  • Look for any jammed paper or debris.
  • Reinstall the panel securely.

Duplexer (if installed):

  • Remove and inspect the duplexer.
  • Clean any rollers and check for obstructions.

Input Tray and Output Tray:

  • Remove all paper.
  • Check for curled, torn, or stuck sheets.

Printhead Access Area:

  • Open the ink cartridge access door.
  • If the carriage doesn’t move, don’t force it—this could indicate a mechanical issue.

Step 2: Clean the Paper Feed Rollers

Dust or worn rollers can cause feeding issues that mimic a jam.

Step 3: Reset the Printer

A simple reset can sometimes clear false error messages.

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the printer and wall outlet.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Plug it back in and turn it on.

Step 4: Check for Carriage or Gear Issues

Since you heard a binding noise and the carriage doesn’t move, this could indicate a carriage jam or gear failure.

If the carriage is stuck on the left or right, gently move it to the center (only if it moves freely). Do not force it if it’s stuck.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for the info, but I have tried all the steps and watch video's related to the 8600 series. With the binding noise I heard prior to the unit giving me the false paper jam message. Got to believe I have a mechanical issue. I will be chasing gremlins to figure out where the mechanical issues are..so time for a new printer.
