Greetings

I have an issue with my HP 530 Smart Tank Printer.I can not make any copies or print outs as it writes PAPER JAM and make sure paper tray is installed properly.

I have followed all the steps I read in the community side but the message just wont disappear and no print out are done.

What could be the cause of this  as I also checked and cleaned the printer back and front.

Hoping to hear from you

Regards

Hi @Victor80001,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Smart Tank 530 printer continues to show a "paper jam" error despite following the suggested steps, there may be underlying issues causing this persistent problem. Here is a comprehensive guide to help resolve it:

1: Remove All Paper & Reseat the Entire Paper Tray (Most Common Fix)

The error “make sure paper tray is installed properly” means the printer does not detect the tray sensor tab.

Do this:

✔ Pull the tray ALL the way out

(You should feel it unclip.)

✔ Shake the tray gently

Sometimes the tray sensor flag inside gets stuck.

✔ Reinsert the tray firmly

Push until you hear a solid click.

If the tray doesn’t click in place, the printer thinks the tray is missing → triggers jam error.

2: Open the Front Access Area and Remove the Paper Path Cover

“Open the front door, open the cartridge access door, lift the handle of the paper path cover and remove the cover.”

Inside this area, look for:

  • Torn scraps of paper
  • Dust is blocking the rollers
  • A stuck sensor flag (small black plastic lever)

If even a tiny scrap remains, the printer will not reset the jam message.

3: Check the Paper‑Path Sensor Flag (The #1 Hidden Cause of False Jams)

Inside the printer, near the rollers, there is a small plastic lever that moves when paper feeds.
If this lever is:

  • Stuck up
  • Snapped out of place
  • Blocked by dust or a scrap

…the printer thinks paper is jammed even when nothing is inside.

Move this lever gently with your finger; it should bounce back freely.

If it feels stuck, clean around it.

4: Power Reset the Correct Way

“Unplug the printer with the power ON, wait 30 seconds, plug directly into the wall.”

Do this:

  1. Turn the printer ON
  2. Unplug it while it is still ON
  3. Wait 60 seconds
  4. Plug directly into a wall outlet (not a power strip)

This resets the motor and sensor system.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
