Hi @Yankee6

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it feels when your printer insists there’s a paper jam even though you’ve carefully checked and even cleaned dust from inside. Thank you for the effort you’ve already put in—it shows real care in maintaining your printer.

Let’s go step by step to clear the false jam message and get your printer working smoothly again.

Steps to Resolve Paper Jam Error When No Jam Exists

Power Reset the Printer

  • With the printer powered on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors) and reconnect to the printer.
  • Power the printer back on.
  • This clears temporary error states.

Inspect All Paper Paths

  • Remove the input tray and output tray.
  • Check inside the rear access door or duplexer if your printer has one.
  • Look for tiny scraps of paper or dust near rollers and sensors. Even small fragments can trigger a jam alert.

Clean the Paper Feed Rollers

  • Use a lint‑free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water.
  • Wipe the rollers gently to remove dust or residue.
  • Allow them to dry completely before reinserting trays.

Check Sensor Areas

  • Inside the paper path, locate the small optical sensors (usually near the rollers).
  • If dust or ink mist covers them, the printer may misread it as a jam.
  • Clean the sensor windows with a dry, soft cloth.

Reload Paper Correctly

  • Fan the stack of paper to prevent sheets from sticking together.
  • Insert clean, plain HP paper into the tray, ensuring guides are snug but not tight.
  • Avoid overloading the tray.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Visit HP Printer Drivers and Firmware.
  • Enter your printer model.
  • Download and install the latest firmware update.
  • Restart the printer after installation.
  • Firmware updates often improve sensor calibration and clear false jam errors.

Test Printing

  • Try printing a single sheet.
  • If successful, gradually increase the number of sheets to confirm smooth feeding.
