Hi @CL202502,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding printer paper jam!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Follow these detailed troubleshooting steps:

Step 1: Power Cycle the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Wait 60 seconds and then plug it back in.
  3. Turn it on and try printing again.

Step 2: Check for Hidden Paper Jams

Even a small scrap of paper can cause repeated jams. Check these areas:

  1. Input Tray: Remove the tray and look for stuck paper.
  2. Output Tray: Lift the top cover and remove any jammed sheets.
  3. Fuser Area (Rear of Printer): Open the rear access door and check for paper stuck in the rollers.
  4. Duplexer (If installed): If your printer has a duplexer, remove and inspect it.

💡 Tip: Use a flashlight to check for tiny pieces of torn paper.

Step 3: Inspect and Clean the Rollers

If the rollers are dirty or worn out, they can cause jams.

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Use a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water to clean the rollers inside the paper tray and rear area.
  3. Let the rollers dry completely before turning the printer back on.

Step 4: Check Paper Settings and Quality

  1. Ensure you're using HP-recommended paper for laser printers.
  2. Avoid overloading the paper tray; fan the paper stack before loading.
  3. Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners on your Mac and check if the correct paper size is selected.

Step 5: Reset the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Press and hold the Resume (or cancel) button for 10-15 seconds while turning it back on.
  3. Release the button when the printer starts resetting.

Step 6: Update Firmware & Drivers

  1. Visit the HP Support Page.
  2. Download and install the latest firmware and drivers for macOS Monterey.

If the issue persists, the paper sensor might be faulty. Let me know if you need further help! 😊

Thanks for responding to my message.  I only just have the time to test everything you have suggested.  Follow up to step 6.  Still having the same issue.  I have just recently replaced 2 cartridges, which amount to half the price of the printer.  It will be a heartache to throw this away.  Any other suggestions on how to fix the paper sensor?  Much appreciated.

As a last attempt, I reinstalled the firmware again. Noticed that the latest version is only up to MacOS 10.  My MacOS is Ventura 13.7.4.  Could that be a problem?

Anyways, now I have inconsistent issues.  Sometimes it prints successfully but the pages are smudged with toner ink.  Sometimes it prints blank pages.  Sometimes the paper gets stuck again.  Each time there's an issue, I had to re-start the printer. Sometimes reset is successful, sometimes not!

Any clues why it has gone berserk LOL?

Hi @CL202502,

Thank you for the response.

It sounds like your printer has gone full Berserk Mode, rampaging through paper stacks and leaving toner smudges in its wake! But worry not, like any warrior, it can be brought back to discipline with the right training (or, in this case, troubleshooting). Let’s see if we can rein it in before it completely loses its sanity.

Paper Path & Sensor Check

  • Even the most battle-worn printers need a clean battlefield.
  • Inspect all access points for tiny bits of leftover paper or dust blocking sensors—a flashlight and some patience go a long way!
  • Use a lint-free cloth with isopropyl alcohol to clean the rollers.

Fuser & Toner Issues

  • Smudging means the toner isn’t fusing properly, either the fuser is malfunctioning, or the toner cartridge has gone rogue.
  • Try printing a cleaning page (found in printer settings).
  • If possible, reseat or replace the toner cartridge.

Let me know if these steps help or if the printer is still rebelling!

I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?"—your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster! 👍

Fight on, warrior! 🏯🔥
