Paper tray half full but printer says I've to load it as its not recognised the paper already in it

Hi @Bigstevie67

Welcome to the HP Support Community! Thanks for posting your query!

I’m sorry your printer isn’t recognizing the paper even though the tray is half full. I understand how frustrating it feels when you’ve already checked for jams or obstructions and the message still insists on loading paper.

To narrow this down, let me ask a few clarifying questions so we can isolate the cause:

  • Which HP printer model are you using?
  • Does the error appear immediately when you try to print, or only after the printer attempts to feed paper?
  • Are you using plain A4/Letter paper, or a different size or type (photo, cardstock, etc.)?
  • Does the issue occur with all trays, or only the main input tray?
  • When you insert paper, do you hear or feel the rollers engage at all, or is there no movement?
  • Have you recently changed the paper type or brand?

These details will help determine whether the problem is sensor‑related, paper type compatibility, or mechanical feed.

We're looking forward to helping you get back up and running!

Hp envy inspire.

Error occurs as soon as it trys to collect paper.

Using plain A4 paper, not changed paper of any kind.

When I ask to print j hear all tne noises it's supposed to do, I see the rollers move but it doesn't pick up paper then a message comes on screen of printer.

I go to the app and it say paper tray empty when it's got nearly a half full pack of paper in it

Thanks for confirming those details @Bigstevie67

I understand how frustrating it must be to hear the rollers move and see the tray half full, yet still get a message saying it’s empty. You’ve already done a great job checking the basics, and that effort is appreciated. Let’s go through a focused set of steps to help restore proper paper pickup on your HP Envy Inspire:

Check paper alignment and guides

  • Remove the stack of A4 paper and fan it gently to prevent sticking.
  • Reinsert the stack, making sure it’s seated flat and not pushed too deep.
  • Adjust the paper width guides so they touch the edges of the paper without bending it.

Inspect the tray and rollers

  • Shine a light into the tray area and check for any small bits of paper or dust buildup.
  • Clean the rollers using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Rotate the rollers gently to clean all sides.

Reset the printer

  • Power off the printer completely and unplug it from the wall.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and power it on.
  • This helps reset the paper detection sensors.

Run Diagnose & Fix from HP App

  • Open the HP App on your PC or mobile device.
  • Select your Envy Inspire printer, go to “Printer Settings,” and choose “Diagnose & Fix.”
  • Follow the steps to detect and resolve paper feed issues.

Update firmware and drivers

Test with a smaller stack

  • Try printing with just 10–15 sheets of A4 paper.
  • If the printer picks up paper successfully, gradually increase the stack to test consistency.

These steps should help the printer recognize and feed paper reliably again. If the issue persists after cleaning and updates, it may point to a feed sensor or roller alignment issue, but often these adjustments resolve it.
