The feed of the hp Smart Tank plus 590 is not working, the printer had been replaced already !

Is this a construction issue or is it designed to fail?

Hi @HerbertSchwarz,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your concern with the HP Smart Tank Plus 590 feed not working, especially since the printer has already been replaced once. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this before assuming a design or construction issue.

Check for Paper Type and Alignment

Make sure the paper is plain A4 or Letter and not curled or damp.

Fan the stack and load it properly against the guide without overfilling.

Clean the Paper Feed Rollers

Open the rear access or front tray (depending on the model).

Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to clean the rollers.

Check for Obstructions in the Feed Path

Remove any jammed scraps of paper or debris inside the tray or rollers.

Even small pieces can cause repeated feed issues.

Verify the Tray Guides Are Not Too Tight

Side guides must touch the paper lightly, not squeeze it.

Overtight guides often stop the paper from feeding.

Print a Self-Test Page from the Printer Panel

Go to Settings → Reports → Print Quality Report.

If it fails to pick paper even without computer input, it confirms a feed mechanism issue.

Try a Different Paper Stack and Batch

Replace the current stack with a new batch of plain paper.

Sometimes faulty or slick paper coating prevents pickup.

Update Printer Firmware

Using the HP Smart app, check for the latest firmware update.

Firmware updates adjust paper feed behavior and roller timing.

Run the “Clean Paper Feed” Utility

In the HP Smart app, go to Printer Settings → Tools → Clean Paper Feed.

This runs the rollers at high friction to improve pickup.

Check if the Environment Is Too Humid or Too Dry

Paper absorbs moisture and becomes difficult to separate.

A slight humidity imbalance can cause feed failure in tank printers.

Observe If the Issue Happens Only After Long Idle Time

If the printer sits unused, rollers may glaze slightly.

Cleaning the rollers usually restores traction.

I hope this helps.
