HP Officejet Pro 7740 ADF will not pick up sheets beginning with the 3rd sheet.  I have cleaned the rollers and rebooted the printer multiple times, but nothing helps.

Hi @JBF63,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) is not picking up sheets starting from the third sheet, and you have already cleaned the rollers and rebooted the printer multiple times,

here are some additional steps you can try:

1. Check Paper Condition and Alignment

  • Paper Quality: Ensure that the paper you are using is not damaged, wrinkled, or stuck together.
  • Alignment: Make sure the sheets are properly aligned and not overfilled in the ADF tray.

2. Clean the ADF Feed Rollers and Separator Pad Thoroughly

  • Roller Cleaning: Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to clean the ADF rollers again. Make sure to clean all the rollers thoroughly, including those further inside the ADF.
  • Separator Pad: Clean the separator pad in the ADF. This pad helps to pick up one sheet at a time. If it's dirty or worn out, it can cause feeding issues.

3. Check for Obstructions

  • Foreign Objects: Inspect the ADF for any small bits of paper or other debris that might be causing the problem. Even small pieces can lead to feeding issues.
  • Internal Inspection: Open the ADF cover and check for any obstructions or misaligned parts inside the feeder.

4. Test with Different Paper

  • Paper Type: Try using a different type or brand of paper to see if the issue persists. Some papers may feed better than others.
  • Paper Size: Make sure the paper size is supported by the ADF. Refer to your printer's manual for supported paper sizes and types.

5. Adjust the Paper Guides

  • Paper Guides: Ensure the paper guides in the ADF are snug against the edges of the paper. Guides that are too loose or too tight can cause feeding issues.

6. Reset the Printer to Factory Settings

  • Factory Reset: Resetting the printer to factory settings might help resolve any software-related issues. Refer to the printer's manual for instructions on performing a factory reset.

7. Firmware Update Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Update Firmware: Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer. Firmware updates can fix bugs and improve hardware performance.

Refer to this document: HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer series User manual

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
