HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

When I try to print something, I keep getting the following message "There is a problem with the printer or print system. Turn the printer OFF then ON. If you continue to get this message, contact HP. 0x6100004a."  When I try to turn the printer off it goes into "Shutting down..." mode, but never shuts down. There is no paper jam, so I don't know why I keep getting this message.

Hi @JWFX,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error message you’re encountering (0x6100004a) typically indicates a hardware issue with your printer. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:

1. Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn Off the Printer: If it gets stuck in "Shutting down..." mode, unplug it from the power outlet.
  • Wait: Leave it unplugged for at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug It Back In: Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on.

2. Check for Hardware Issues

  • Inspect the Printer: Look for any loose connections or foreign objects inside the printer.
  • Check Ink Cartridges: Ensure the ink cartridges are properly installed and not empty. Remove and reinstall them to ensure a good connection.

3. Run Printer Diagnostics

  • If the printer allows, run any built-in diagnostic tests:
    • Use the printer's control panel to access diagnostics or maintenance settings.

4. Update or Reinstall Drivers

  • Ensure your printer drivers are up to date:
    • Go to the HP Support website, enter your printer model, and download the latest drivers.

5. Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults

  • If you can access the printer’s menu:
    • Go to Settings > Printer Maintenance or Setup and look for an option to Restore Factory Defaults.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
