HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I have removed any jams from the top portion of printer, the front ( toner area), the paper tray, and also from the upper back side of the printer.  There is one sheet of paper though stuck in the lower back of printer which I can not pull out.  It is inbetween the duplexer and the output bin area.  On the left and right side of the paper where my fingers have had limited access, I tried to pull up or down, and I start to feel the paper want to rip.  So I stopped thus I can keep the sheet of the paper intacked.  How do I get this out?  The book shows the area, but I see no knobs to rotate the rollers and possibly get the sheet out.

Hi @MarkH095,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I completely understand how stressful it is to have a sheet of paper stuck deep inside your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw, especially when it’s wedged between the duplexer and output bin and feels like it might tear. You’ve done the right thing by stopping before it rips. Let’s walk through the safest way to remove it.

Steps to Remove Jammed Paper from the Duplexer Area

1. Power Off and Unplug the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall to avoid any electrical risk.
  • Let it cool down for a few minutes. The fuser near the duplexer can be hot.

2. Open the Rear Access Door

  • Locate the rear door or duplexer access panel.
  • Open it fully to expose the rollers and paper path.

3. Use Both Hands to Gently Remove the Paper

  • Shine a flashlight into the duplexer area.
  • Use both hands to evenly pull the paper from both sides.
  • Pull slowly and straight to avoid tearing.
  • If the paper is caught under a roller, gently rotate the roller manually (if accessible) to release tension.

4. Remove the Duplexer (If Needed)

  • Some models allow you to remove the duplexer unit entirely:
    • Look for release latches or side clips.
    • Once removed, you may get better access to the jammed sheet.

5. Check for Torn Pieces

  • After removing the paper, inspect the area for tiny scraps or dust.
  • Use a lint-free cloth to gently clean the rollers if needed.

6. Plug In and Restart

  • Plug the printer back in and power it on.
  • Try printing a test page to confirm the jam is fully cleared.
