I have a hp office jet 8022 that I use infrequently and Have not had many issues with  Over the summer we had a bad storm and we suddenly lost power for several hours.  When the printer turned back on, it continues to display the same error Carriage Jam (see photo). I have attempted to clear the area and followed step by step instructions, restarted and unplugged the printer without any success.  The printer is out of warranty.  I would really like to fix this printer since it’s only used occasionally but I’m stumped as to how to correct.  When I open the cartridge access door the ink (printer carriage) can not move to the left and does not move when manually trying to move it.

Hi @Kzeitler,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your printer is displaying a “Carriage Jam” error after a recent power outage, and the ink carriage is stuck on the right side and not moving. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

a. Power Reset the Printer
    • Turn the printer on.
    • While it is still ON, disconnect the power cable from the back of the printer.
    • Unplug it from the wall outlet as well.
    • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
    • Plug the power cable back directly into the wall outlet and then into the printer.
    • Turn on the printer and let it fully initialize.

b. Remove Paper and Check All Access Points
    • Remove any paper from the input and output trays.
    • Open the rear access door or duplexer and check for any small pieces of paper or debris.
    • Gently clean the rollers in the rear area with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water.

c. Check the Carriage Path Manually (With Printer Unplugged)
    • Open the ink cartridge access door.
    • Ensure the printer is turned off and unplugged.
    • Look inside the carriage area for any torn paper, dried ink buildup, or foreign objects obstructing the track.
    • If the carriage is stuck on the right side, gently try moving it toward the center. If it does not move, do not force it.

d. Clean the Encoder Strip (Transparent Strip Behind the Carriage)
    • Locate the thin transparent strip running behind the ink carriage.
    • With a dry lint-free cloth, gently wipe the strip from one side to the other. This helps clear dust or ink residue that can cause sensor errors.

e. Reinsert Ink Cartridges and Close All Doors
    • Reinstall the ink cartridges properly.
    • Make sure all access doors and trays are completely closed.

I hope this helps.
