I have a (5 year old) HP Office Jet 5258 Printer, the paper  is not passing through correctly, part of the "Top" of the sheets information is not being printed.  I have removed and replaced the cover over the rollers (looking for a paper jam), there is no paper jam and to "error" message on the screen.  What else can I do?....or.....is it broken?

Hi @PeJay1 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your printer might be experiencing paper rollers not passing paper through correctly issues with its paper feeding mechanism.

Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot the problem:

  • Check Paper Alignment: Make sure the paper is loaded correctly in the input tray and that it's aligned properly. Sometimes misaligned paper can cause feeding issues.
  • Clean the Rollers: Over time, paper dust and debris can accumulate on the rollers, causing them to slip or not grip the paper properly. You can clean the rollers with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water or isopropyl alcohol. Make sure to unplug the printer before cleaning and avoid using excessive moisture.
  • Reset the Printer: Sometimes a simple reset can resolve minor issues. Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for a few minutes. Then, plug it back in and turn it on again.
  • Check for Firmware Updates: Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. Manufacturers often release updates that address performance and compatibility issues. Update the firmware on an HP printer
  • Inspect for Obstructions: Even though you didn't find any paper jams, it's worth checking for any other obstructions inside the printer that might be hindering the paper path.
  • Adjust Paper Settings: In the printer settings on your computer, ensure that the paper size and type settings match the paper you're using. Sometimes mismatched settings can cause feeding problems.
  • Try Different Paper: If you've been using a particular type or brand of paper, try using a different one to see if the issue persists. Some printers can be sensitive to certain types of paper.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
