Help please! My printer is loading paper crooked and then has an Error: Carriage Jam. I have cleaned the paper picks, checked the inside for obstructions, reset the printer, checked firmware for updates... nothing seems to work. Any insight into how I might fix the issue? The paper picks do not appear broken or non-functioning. Thank you for you any help or direction you my provide!

@ChicagoCaroline, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP DeskJet 2723e All-in-One Printer is experiencing a paper feed alignment issue followed by a carriage jam (E3 error). Since you've already tried cleaning and resetting, let’s go through a more detailed step-by-step troubleshooting guide to help resolve this:
Check for Obstructions in the Paper Path and Carriage
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the cartridge access door.
- Gently move the carriage (ink cartridge holder) side to side. It should move freely.
- Remove any loose paper, debris, or labels that may be stuck inside.
- Do not force the carriage if it’s stuck, this can damage the printer.
Inspect and Align the Paper Stack
- Use clean, wrinkle-free paper.
- Make sure the paper stack is aligned properly and not overfilled.
- Adjust the paper width guides so they touch the edges of the paper without bending it.
- Fan the paper stack before loading to prevent sticking.
Clean the Paper Feed Rollers
Even if they look fine, dust or residue can cause misfeeds:
- Turn off and unplug the printer.
- Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
- Gently clean the paper rollers inside the input tray.
- Let them dry completely before plugging the printer back in.
Reset the Printer
- Disconnect the power cord from the printer and wall outlet.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid power strips).
- Turn the printer back on.
Update Firmware and Drivers
- Make sure your printer firmware is up to date.
- On macOS Big Sur, go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, select your printer, and click Options & Supplies > Driver to check for updates.

Hi Max3Aj.
I actually did all of the things you suggested prior to posting to the community. I exhausted all avenues that I could find. Given your list, I suspect that there are no other things I can do to solve this issue? Can I easily switch out the roller? Is that the actual problem? I can't figure out what could possibly be the problem here. And YES, you are correct. It is a paper feed alignment followed by carriage jam issue. I'm at a loss. This printer is not that old. I really don't use it like a work horse every day but when I need it, I really need it! I am open to any other suggestions you may have. Thank you! CB

Thank you for your response, @ChicagoCaroline.
Since you've already done all the standard troubleshooting and the issue persists, you're absolutely right to suspect a mechanical fault, possibly with the paper feed rollers or alignment mechanism.
Here’s what you need to know and consider next:
Can You Replace the Paper Feed Rollers on the HP DeskJet 2723e?
Unfortunately, HP DeskJet 2700e series printers (including the 2723e) are designed as entry-level consumer models, and HP does not provide user-replaceable parts like feed rollers for these models. The rollers are not modular and are typically integrated into the printer’s internal frame.
That said, here are your options:
1. Try Manual Roller Cleaning (Advanced)
If you’re comfortable:
- Use a lint-free cloth with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol (90%+).
- Gently rotate and clean the pickup rollers deep inside the input tray using a flashlight and tweezers or a cotton swab.
- Let it dry for 10 minutes before powering on.
2. Check for Warped or Curled Paper
Even slightly curled paper can cause skewing and jams. Try a fresh ream of HP-branded paper if you haven’t already.
3. Factory Reset the Printer
Sometimes a full reset can recalibrate internal sensors:
- Press and hold the Cancel (X) and Wireless buttons together for 5 seconds until the printer restarts.
If the issue persists, we suggest you please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
